Short Description:
European citizenship, introduced with the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, marked a key step in the evolution of the European project from an economic community to a political and democratic union. Today, this concept faces new challenges in the context of rapid digitalisation.
This panel will explore how digital transformation and artificial intelligence are reshaping the exercise of rights linked to EU citizenship, sometimes at the risk of weakening their substance. The discussion will also examine how the European Union and its member states are responding to these developments in order to safeguard democratic pluralism and fundamental rights in the digital age.
